Photo Shoot - Behind The Scenes

My friend Candi needed a few models last minute for a fashion photo shoot in Santa Cruz because her scheduled models had bailed. I recruited Joanna who recruited two of her roommates, Brianna and Keena. Andy and I were recruited for the two jobs every guy wants: grip and gaffer on a fashion photo shoot.

Kayaking Half Moon Bay

Rayne, Sara and I had ourselves a well rounded Half Moon Bay adventure: Loaded the bikes into Rayne's truck. Biked from Venice State Beach to Pillar Point. Watched surfers at Mavericks. Rented kayaks. Paddled the harbor. Interacted with the one of the indigenous sea lion population. Identified various waterfowl. Dodged fishing boats. Trespassed on an abandon pier. Surreptitiously flipped Sara's rudder up with my paddle then successfully blamed it on Rayne after she noticed it a good 20 minutes later.

Extreme Sledding

I love Winthrop! After breakfast we shot skeet. After lunch we went sledding. After sledding we pulled a truck out of a ditch. All in a day's work in the Methow Valley. Snorting an ice cold line of pure snow up my nose. This would be Mike and Rachelle's next Christmas card if only we had remembered to include Carter and Damian. Carter's jump may have won him most air but possibly only because we don't have photographic evidence of little sister Sydney's spectacular launch. Bart and Velma - always frolicking in the snow.

Alamere Falls

Saturday was perfect weather for handstands on the beach and a waterfall. Sara and Maret provided the handstands and other graceful feats; made possible by the several thousands of dollars their parents spent on ice skating and gymnastics lessons. God provided the waterfall.

Technically a waterfall that falls on the beach, or in the ocean, is a tidefall. Alamere Falls is one of two such tidefalls found on the California coast.

The North Face provided us with steady footing; each of us sporting a pair of Hedgehogs.

Half-Marathon

Today I ran my first half-marathon. I ran cross-country in high school but runs were generally only three or four miles. What I loved most about it was the trail runs and have done trail running off an on since then, but never more than a five mile run and never very consistently. The longest runs I ever did were Bay To Breakers while still in high school and The Mud Run in 2002. But now I might be hooked on this long(er) distance run business. Or at least half-marathons for now. I'm not entirely sure about the full marathon thing...yet.

The winner's stand - we only stood and posed, our new friend Guillaume actually won the half-marathon. Guillaume also wins favorite quote of the day with: "Hello? Yes...I win!" - The first thing he said, using a cell phone he borrowed from Andy, to the person who's couch he is staying on, in San Francisco, while on vacation in the states, from France.





Today's run was part of The North Face Endurance Challenge 2008. I've worked at The North Face in Palo Alto for two years now as Visual Merchandiser. Getting free trail-running shoes every six months and hanging cool posters of ultra long distance athletes every month left me little choice but to sign up for this event. And how could I resist The North Face paying my entrance fee with free shwag included. The categories were 10k, half-marathon, 50k and 50mile. I figured half-marathon was my best bet for challenging yet realistic. Knowing that this event was organized by The North Face I should have figured on it being a little more challenging than just a regular half-marathon.


See that last little tiny blip of uphill at the very end? That was the hardest part of the run! I was mentally prepared for the three big uphills and did great on all the downhills - then all but checked out for the tiny little stretch to the finish!

I'm The Winner!

I entered a pumpkin dessert contest and won. My entry was Pumpkin and Black Bean Soup. It was the only entry that was not a dessert. But then again, "Pumpkin Desert Contest" is printed on the certificate I received for winning. I think my winning move here was the use of cilantro and lime, giving my soup a distinct desert flavor that none of the desserts could compete with.
